Technology serves as the driving force behind innovation, productivity and interconnectedness across various spheres of society, from contributing to healthcare advancements that save lives to facilitating solutions to global challenges. Technology can help us build a more informed, connected, and equitable world for future generations, but only if it is developed and utilized thoughtfully, responsibly and ethically.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is advancing at an unprecedented pace. It is crucial that entrepreneurs, developers and policy makers commit to guiding the responsible use and development of AI to ensure its benefits are shared broadly and the risks of potentially harmful consequences, especially to members of underserved and low-income communities, are minimized and mitigated. At the same time, policy makers can play an important role in creating an environment that encourages the kinds of technological innovation that foster economic growth and social progress.

As AI emerges as crucial technology, it is imperative to dedicate significant attention to the various factors that must be considered in guiding its responsible development, this includes but it’s not limited to:

-Ethical considerations: AI systems should adhere to ethical principles and respect human rights.

-Bias mitigation: AI development should address and minimize biases that may be present in data or algorithms.

-Data privacy and security: AI development must protect the privacy and security of individuals’ data used by AI systems.

-Transparency: AI systems must be understandable and interpretable by humans.

-Accountability: AI systems should establish mechanisms to assign responsibility and accountability for AI system behavior.

-Robustness: AI systems should perform reliably under different conditions and scenarios.

-Fairness: AI systems should provide fair and equitable treatment to all individuals.

-User trust and acceptance: AI developers should act in ways that earn trust and acceptance among users and stakeholders regarding AI technologies.

-Regulatory compliance: AI developers should ensure they’re compliant with relevant laws, regulations and standards governing AI development and deployment.

ALLvanza is committed to continuing its advocacy efforts to ensure that the benefits and opportunities generated by new technologies are equitably available to Latinos and other members of underserved communities. Latinos make up a growing percentage of the American population, and that growth will continue into the future. According to Nielsen, the average age of Latinos in the U.S is 27, while the average age for non-Latinos Whites stands at 42. Latinos currently make up 18 percent of the U.S. population, but are responsible for the majority of the nation’s population growth. https://www.nielsen.com/insights/2018/young-digital-and-social-connecting-with-todays-hispanic-consumers/. In other words, the future success of our country is entwined with the thriving of Latino communities, who must be equipped not only to be wise consumers of technology, but also to fully participate in its production.

The responsible and ethical development AI and other technologies, coupled with a commitment to ensuring that everyone can benefit from and contribute to our technological progress, is essential for creating a future that is more equitable, diverse and rich in opportunity for all.
